The school is named 'Kap Yan' to commemorate the Board of Directors in the year of Kap Yan in the Lunar Calendar (1972) for the fund they donate to Tung Wah Group of Hospitals. It is one of the three EMI (English as the medium of instruction) Schools in North District.

[edit] Reputation

In the past decade Kap Yan Directors' College has been enjoying a share of good reputation among the New Territories. Being one of the EMI schools in the North District, the college is considered one of the top institutes in the area. However, due to the decline in academic result and conduct in recent years, the college has been outclassed by its arch-competitor, H.K.T.A. Tang Hin Memorial Secondary School , which is located right next to the college in Choi Yuen Estate.

[edit] History and Important Events

[edit] The P.K. Wan Era

Mr Wan Pui kwok was the former Headmaster of the school. Under his management, the college had become one of the most popular schools in the district renowned for its excellent academic results.

[edit] The Shirley-Wong Takeover

In the year 2004, Ms Shirley Wong She Lai became the headmistress of the college following the departure of her predecessor Mr Wan Pui Kwok. The former boss of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Chen Zao Men College was famous for its characteristic singing skill she show when leading the students to sing the school song. Under her governance, the school is becoming more and more famous. Almost all students like the new boss and the morale of students and teachers are high at the moment.

Partly due to Wong's eminent performance in managing the school, She was elected the chairperson of the Hong Kong Subsidized Secondary Schools Council, an organisation representing subsidized secondary school in Hong Kong. It is a glorious moment to Wong and to the school.

[edit] New Regulations

Immediately after her arrival the school regulations had been tightened. The appearance of students are strictly control by the school on the ground that the school have to maintain its fame. The freedom of students choosing their own hairstyle is heavily intervened. The sideburn cannot be longer than the level of the half ear while the hair at the back cannot touch the collar. As for female students, Their hair should be braided in a way that the pigtail is located exactly at the mid-point of the two ears and is parallel to the perpendicular bisector of the two ears. Besides, the colours of students' glasses is confined to a maximum of two colours. It is rumoured that a new bill of regulations forcing students to wear glasses of either black, white or grey is going to be established. There are also rules about woolen sweaters which state that the sleeves shoud not covered the fingers and the end of the body-part should not be lower that the end of the sleeves. The new regulations are generally believed to be unreasonable and have aroused fierce discontentedness among students.

[edit] Kap Yan as an EMI school

In the academic year 05-06, the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) compiled a External School Review on the college. The report criticize the school due to the lack of a good English learning Environment an EMI school should have created. Desperate, Miss Wong reacted to the accusation by a series of boosting measures. Various English-speaking areas have been set up in the General Office, Computer Laboratories and the Library. Students and teachers as well are required to speak in English in those areas. Simultaneously, the school declared every Tuesday and Thursday English-speaking days on which students and teachers have to use English to communicate except during Chinese or Putonghua lessons. These measures, however, are proved ineffective as students and teachers generally don't follow the obligation.

[edit] The HFMD Outbreak

In May 2006, four students have shown symptoms of Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), a contagious disease usually affects children and infants only. It was further confirmed that one of the students had been infected by EV71, a fatal Enterovirus which may cause brainstem encephalitis and pulmonary oedema. The school was then under emergency medical surveillance by the Centre of Health Protection. The incident had unveiled the inadequate effort by the school in maintaining good hygiene.

[edit] The Rise of Another Wan

In summer of 2006, Mr Leung Ping Yan, the director of the School Moral Education Board, resigned from the school and moved to TWGHs Chang Ming Thien College, which is ruled by former Principal Mr Wan Pui Kwok. The departure of Leung had given rise to Mr Wan Kin Kwok, the successor of moral education board director. In the following academic year, Mr Wan initiated the 'We are One Campaign'. The slogan 'We Are One' repeatedly used in Mr Wan's Moral Education Talk delivered to students. The slogan has the following meaning:

  1. We are one, meaning we are together in unity.
  2. We are the number one, meaning that we are the best School.

After Mr Wan became the Moral education head, his chance of having speeches in front of students surged. Being also the head of Stage Crew, Wan is playing an increasingly important role at school. His 'We are One' campaign has successfully fostered a great sense of belonging among students to the school. Now, Wan has become the right-hand man of Ms Wong and is conceivably indispensable to the school.
