Tumi is a manufacturer of suitcases and bags for travel. The company was founded in 1975 and is named for a Peruvian deity according to its founder (Actually, the word 'tumi' refers to a ceremonial knife, not the actual 'deity', whose proper name is Ñaymlap) , who spent time in Peru while in the Peace Corps. The products are known for their black-on-black ballistic nylon. There are more than 50 Tumi stores, and the product is sold in department stores. The company is based in South Plainfield, New Jersey. Tumi is known among consumers for its exclusivity, and quality stylish products.

Tumi was, at one time, made entirely in the US and offered a lifetime warranty. Since 2004, however, Tumi has moved production of items to China and reduced their warranty to 5 years, citing need to do so based on industry norms. Tumi focuses their marketing and branding efforts on aggressive awareness campaigns and events.
