[edit] Biography
Tulip was brought up in Mumbai, and attended the Jamnabai Narsee School, and later Mithibai College from where she graduated in food science and chemistry. She excelled in sports, competing in athletics at the National level.
Tulip entered the Femina Miss India Contest in 2000. She did not make it to the list of winners, but was noticed by many advertising agencies. She appeared in a number of advertising campaigns for big brands. She also appeared in a video made as a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
[edit] Film career
Tulip entered movies quite by chance. She was a friend of the bride of Aditya Chopra, the son of director Yash Chopra. The family noticed her at their wedding and asked her to appear for an audition, following which they cast her in Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai.
Not being fluent in Hindi, she trained in Hindi diction and in acting at Feroze Khan’s studio. She was also advised by the film-makers to change her name to something more Indian, as audiences might have difficulty in accepting a heroine with such an unconventional name. She chose the name Sanjana, which was also the name of the character she was playing
The film was an average hit[2][3] [4][5]. A bout of ill-health and the resulting depression prevented her from taking up any new film offers for a year.
Reverting back to her given name, Tulip next appeared in the Telugu film Villain. Her next Hindi movie was Dil Maange More with Shahid Kapoor, Ayesha Takia and Soha Ali Khan. The film got average reviews but it was not a box office success.
Shortly afterwards, she again vanished from cinema for two years because of severe back problems resulting from a shifted spine and a slipped disc. She reappeared in Matrubhoomi - a dark film about a futuristic world with almost no women. Her performance in it was praised and established her credibility as an actress.
[edit] Personal life
She is of mixed parentage, with a Gujarati Indian father, and a Lebanese-Armenian mother. Currently, she is in a relationship with management guru & business tycoon, Captain Vinod Nair.
[edit] Trivia
- She is one of the few actors to simultaneously appear in advertisements for both Coca-cola (with Hritik Roshan) and Pepsi (with Southern star Pavan Kalyan).
- She does not smoke or drink alcohol. She also does not consume aerated drinks, chocolates or sweets. This is ironic considering that she has appeared in advertisements for many of these products.
- While growing up, Tulip practiced both Hinduism and Christianity, because of her mixed parentage.
