Saxifraga cespitosa L. |
The Tufted Saxifrage (Saxifraga cespitosa) is a flower common all over the high arctic. It stretches further south in mountainous areas of the Alps, Norway, Iceland, Siberia and Alaska.
Densely tufted from a stout taproot. Stems very short with withered, dead leaves at the base. Leaves with 3-5 lobes, glandular-hairy like the leaves and calyx. Flowering stems 5-10 cm, 1 or 2 flowers per stem. Petals white, twice die length of die calyx lobes. Smaller specimens, with shorter stems and smaller, yellowish-greenish petals (var. uniflora) are rather frequent.
It grows on ledges and gravelly places.
