Tuathal Maelgarb

Tuathal Maelgarb was the son of Cormac Cáech son of Coirpre mac Néill, and thus a great-grandson of Niall Noigiallach and a member of the early Uí Néill. He is the first man explicitly listed in the Annals of Ulster as "ri Teamrach" or King of Tara.
He is listed in the years 544 which states that "Tuathal Maelgarb was killed, i.e. in Grellach Allta by Mael Mórda, and Diarmait son of Cerball succeeded him." What position Diarmait mac Cerbaill succeeded him in is not stated, but under the year 549 - seemingly a listing from another book with a different chronology - it is written that
"Uel hoc anno Tuathal Maelgarbh, ri Teamrach, interiit i n-Greallaig Eilte, iugulatus o Mael Mhor h-U Mc. h-I, qui et ipse statim occissus est. Unde dicitur echt Mhaeil Mhoir."/"Or, in this year Tuathal Maelgarb, king of Temair, perished in Grellach Eilte, being killed by Mael Mór, descendant of Mac Í. The latter was killed immediately after, hence the saying, ‘the murderous feat of Máel Mórda’."
