[edit] History
[edit] Start of JROTC
JROTC was started in Cheyenne, Wyoming with the start of the 1903-1904 school year. the program was started as a mandatory program for all male students. The students were required to be in class 3 days a week for about an hour each day. On select days the cadets were to wear uniforms which resembeled the uniform of a US Army soldier. The program was started by Lt. Howard Tafton with about 30 cadets. The teachers of the program changed from active duty servicemen to retired soldiers. The program changed from sponsorship from the Wyoming National Guard to the sponsorship of the US Defense Act of 1913. Many changes have gone through JROTC, with class being an optional-only class. In 1973, females were then allowed into the program with all benefits that the male cadets had. In 1999, the US Army JROTC headquarters called for a change in the Program Of Instruction (POI) to teach life skills to ensure the cadets lead a healthy life of good choices and an idea of what they want to do.
[edit] JROTC Now
Now the Cheyenne High School has evolved into the Cheyenne Central High School. Classes taught in Central's JROTC Dept are run by two teachers. The Senior Army Instructor, Ltc. Ralph Simmerman, and the Army Instructor Msg. William Runnels. Ltc. Simmerman has just joined the program and Msg. Runnels is leaving at the end of the school year 05/06. "Sarge", as we call him, has served 25 years with the department. The POI taught in JROTC at Central includes:

A year in JROTC consists of basic drill & ceremony, marksmanship, map orienteering, rank indentification, chain of command (national and cadet staff), and others which seem to pop up at different times.
[edit] Leadership, Education & Training
Leadership, Education & Training in JROTC is what level each cadet falls at based on year(s) in the program. The levels fall as this:
