- Description: Tryptophan synthase (EC 4.2.1.20) catalyses the reaction between indole 3-glycerolphosphate and serine to produce tryptophan. The enzyme from .E. coli is an &alpha2β2 tetramer, with the α- and β-subunits catalyzing different steps of the reaction as indicated. Free indole is not released from the native tetramer.
