Trucolor was a process used and owned by Consolidated Film Industries division of Republic Pictures. Trucolor was a two-strip (red and blue-green) process based on the earlier work of William Van Doren Kelley on Prizma Color and later color systems such as Multicolor and Cinecolor. Republic used Trucolor for its westerns, mostly Roy Rogers epics, through the 1940s and early 1950s. The last film photographed in the process was Johnny Guitar (1954), directed by Nicholas Ray and starring Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden. With the advent of Eastmancolor and Ansco color films, which gave better results at a cheaper price, Trucolor was abandoned.
