Troy Gregory
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Troy Gregory (b. November 13, 1966) is a current prolific singer songwriter and eccentric multi-instrumentalist achieving "cult rock god" status. Praised by musical legends such as the late John Peel and Kim Fowley ( who dubbed Troy "the bastard son of Keith Richards and Syd Barrett midwifed by Nick Lowe" ), most notably for his work with his group The Witches and his solo recordings "Sybil" and "Laura". His lyrics tend to be more prose with focus mainly on dark subject matter delivered with a cynical sense of the absurd and bittersweet personal pathos not unlike Morrissey. Except Troy is very much a Detroit artist , deep hints of Motown, Fortune Records ,Iggy and The Stooges and Alice Cooper loom faithfully in his gospel like delivery. Performing since his early teens, Troy has also garnered a curiously diverse resume' of musicians he has recorded, performed, or collaborated with including Killing Joke, The Dirtbombs, Electric Six, Swans, Nathaniel Mayer, The Volebeats, Andre Williams, Prong, Flotsam and Jetsam and Larval. He is also a "jack of all trades" from producing his own recordings and shooting his own videos. His macabre paintings have been showcased along with John Sinclair and Sun-Ra. He has also appeared in various films most recently Steve Martins "Shopgirl". His writing and social commentary have been featured in many Detroit publications and a spoken word album has been suggested. Currently he is planning a film and two records for his new band Troy Gregory and The Stepsisters with keyboardist Mary Alice and bassist Teri Lynn. In 2006 they made over 30 songs available for free download. He also performs with The Witches, The Dirtbombs, and as a solo artist. He resides in Detroit,Michigan.
