Troll (The 10th Kingdom)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the 2000 film The 10th Kingdom by Simon Moore, the Trolls of the Nine Kingdoms are a warlike species; the Troll's 3rd Kingdom are like the 'Sparta' to the 4th Kingdom's 'Athens', they hate each other. The Trolls were ruled by Relish the Troll King, who is survived by his two sons: half-brothers Burly and Bluebell; and his daughter, Burly and Bluebell's half-sister—Blabberwort; after Relish was poisoned by the Evil Queen.

[edit] The 3rd Kingdom

The 3rd Kingdom is ruled by the Trolls and giants. This is the place where Jack originally planted all the beanstalks. The ever-growing beanstalks have sucked all the life from the earth and created a desolate kingdom where nothing grows. The giants live in the clouds and are a dying species due to alcoholism and low fertility. The Trolls rule this barren land at ground level. It is a large, run-down kingdom where a military-style government rules. Their complete lack of interest in farming, along with having a small slave population, make the trolls reliant upon aggression and thieving to survive. Trolls have an obsession with shoes and fine leather.

[edit] Trolls—as they are in the Nine Kingdoms

The Trolls primary means of incapacitating their victims is "Troll-Dust": a pink, magical dust, that when a victim is struck with or ingests a dose/pinch—they are immediately struck into unconsciousness and are left at the mercy of the Trolls.

As aggressive as he was ugly, King Relish was a warrior with little to fear, and many a town has felt the harsh brutality of his army, when they would make raids to steal food, leather, shoes, and anything else.

Trolls are territorial, marking their territory with graffiti. The people they abduct to use as slaves or as torture victims or as 'Troll Toys' for fun or information, are tattooed with a brand marking the victim as a "Troll Toy".

Relish the Troll King (Ed O'Neill) ruled the beanstalk ravished 3rd Kingdom, but he has long desired to expanding his kingdom by conquering the other eight kingdoms with the help of his two sons, Burly and Bluebell, and his daughter Blabberwort, at his side. Relish's three children, Burly, Bluebell and Blabberwort, were all born from different mothers. (In an interview, Jeremiah Berkitt (aka Bluebell) seemed to hit Relish's character on the head when he supposed that "Dad might have eaten them".) His plans have been interrupted more than once by the incarceration of his three idiot children in the Snow White Memorial Prison by the forces of Prince Wendell, ruler of the green and fertile 4th Kingdom and Relish's main opponent to the Trollification of the Nine Kingdoms.

Well, he is the Troll King. He is like a Klingon in "Star Trek" -- aggressive by nature and war-like, violent. It is Al Bundy in make-up - Al Bundy in drag... and Al Bundy was like Relish the Troll King without make-up.

Ed O'Neill, on his character

The 3rd Kingdom abounds with stories of the Troll King’s peculiarities and of the stupidity of his children. Relish is also known for his shoe fetish, he is believed to have the greatest collection of shoes in all the Nine Kingdoms. The Troll King is not lacking in the footwear department with Torture shoes, magic boots, and dragon-skin pumps are among his prized possessions, the centrepiece of which is his most prized pair of Magic-Shoes that make the wearer invisible - these boots render the wearer completely invisible for a limited period of time, but their magic can be addictive and it is widely known that the Troll King has been in and out of various treatment programs.

When Relish last broke in the Snow White Memorial Prison to yet again liberate his three children (although they have disappointed his so many times, he's still comes to bail them out despite that he's ashamed that they were imprisoned for minor offences) - he had tried to teach them everything he knows, hoping that together they will conquer all Nine Kingdoms; he hears the call of the incarcerated Evil step-mother of Prince Wendell (the Evil Queen) whom Relish frees and witnesses as she uses magic to change Prince Wendell's outward appearance into a dog - and her dog's outward appearance into Prince Wendell's.

In exchange for freeing her, allowing her the services of his three children to retrieve Prince Wendell, and to not tell anyone about what he had seen her do to Prince Wendell - The Evil Queen 'Promises' King Relish half of the 4th Kingdom to rule. After his children return without Prince Wendell, but tell him about the mythical '10th Kingdom' - Relish decides to seize on the opportunity of Prince Wendell's 'absence' and take his promised half of the 4th Kingdom, defying any attempt by the Queen to persuade him to call back his armies and return to the 3rd Kingdom.

In the The 10th Kingdom, Burly, Blabberwort and Bluebell serve as comic relief, as they are the Nine Kingdom's answer for The Three Stooges. These half-siblings are rarely found apart; Burly, Blabberwort and Bluebell (Hugh O'Gorman, Dawnn Lewis, Jeremiah W. Birkett), are the three idiot children of Relish the Troll King, who tries to lead them into following in his footsteps. Burly, Bluebell and Blabberwort, were all born from different mothers:

  • Burly, the oldest, the strongest, and the tallest of the three, and looks the most like their father Relish. Like most trolls, Burly has little in the way of brains; Burly is a simplistic fight-first-bury-the-bodies-later sort of guy, fights with an axe. Amongst his half-siblings, his colour is red. Whenever Burly has been stressed, angered or fustraited etc, he utters a Nine Kingdom's profanity: "Suck an Elf".

We are Troll Princes, of the most subtle, violent nature.

Hugh O'Gorman, on the Troll King's children

  • Blabberwort, the second oldest, the only girl and almost as tall as Burly, is the brains of the group (well she's less dumb then the other two) and is armed with a knife. Amongst her half-siblings, her colour is orange. Just like Burly, whenever Blabberwort has been stressed, angered or fustraited etc, she will utter a Nine Kingdom's profanity: "Suck an Elf".

Blabberwort is actually the sex symbol in the movie. The people of the magical Nine Kingdoms have a hard time resisting her feminine charms. Aside from that, she beats people up and grunts a lot. She also loves the Bee Gees.

Dawnn Lewis, on her character, Blabberwort

  • Bluebell, is the youngest and smallest. Bluebell is more of a follower than a leader, he won't hesitate to jump into the battle, whether it's for or against his siblings, he's the Yes man of the three, and like his sister, Blabberwort, he is also armed with a knife. Amongst his half-siblings, his colour is yellow. Just like with Burly and Blabberwort, whenever Bluebell has been stressed, angered or fustraited etc, he will utter a Nine Kingdom's profanity: "Suck an Elf".

We're three big idiots, basically -- dangerous idiots, but that's where the comedy comes from.
