- January 1, 1951 - Typhoon Fran dissipated in the South China Sea after passing over the Philippines, becoming the first recorded Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclone to have existed in two calendar years.
- January 2, 2005 - Cyclone Raymond (pictured) reached its peak with 95 km/h (60 mph) winds in the Timor Sea before it made landfall near Kalumburu Community, Western Australia.
- January 3, 2000 - Tropical Storm Astride (pictured) made landfall near Mogincual, Mozambique.
- January 4, 2002 - Cyclone Bernie struck northern Australia as a Category 2 cyclone after forming in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
- January 5, 2004 - Cyclone Heta (pictured) reached its peak with a central pressure of 915 hPa (mbar). Heta caused $150 million of damage, mostly on American Samoa.
- January 6, 2006 - Tropical Storm Zeta (pictured) dissipated in the central Atlantic Ocean, ending the record-breaking 2005 Atlantic hurricane season.
- January 7, 1966 - Cyclone Denise passed over Réunion, dropping about 1800 mm (72 inches) of rain on the island in 24 hours; the highest amount of rainfall from any tropical cyclone to fall in 24 hours.
- January 8, 1979 - Typhoon Alice reached its peak with 215 km/h (130 mph) winds in the open Pacific Ocean. Alice caused extensive damage in the Marshall Islands.
- January 9, 1880 - An unnamed tropical cyclone struck land near Onslow, Western Australia. The storm created an 8 metre (26 foot) storm tide and sank the ship Adelia, drowning some of the crew.
- January 10, 1980 - Cyclone Amy struck the Western Australia coast as a Category 5 cyclone, causing over $2.7 million of damage.
- January 11, 1998 - Cyclone Katrina (pictured) continued to move erratically in the South Pacific to the east of Australia. Katrina lasted for 24 days in total.
- January 12, 2002 - Tropical Storm Tapah reached its peak strength with 95 km/h (60 mph) winds just to the east of the Philippines. Tapah hit northern Luzon shortly before it dissipated with minimal effects.
- January 13, 2003 - Cyclone Ami caused heavy rain of over 300 mm (12 inches) on Taveuni, Fiji. The resulting floods killed 2 and made 500 homeless.
- January 14, 2006 - Cyclone Urmil (pictured) reached its peak with 110 km/h (70 mph) winds near Tonga.
- January 15, 1995 - A cyclone in the Mediterranean Sea (pictured) developed an eye-like structure, becoming one of the few possible Mediterranean tropical cyclones on record.
- January 16, 1988 - Typhoon Roy made landfall on the eastern Philippines. Roy caused over $23 million of damage there and in the Federated States of Micronesia.
- January 17, 1971 - Cyclone Ada (track pictured) hit the Whitsunday Islands off the Queensland coast. Ada killed 14 people and caused $390 million of damage.
- January 18, 1978 - Subtropical Storm One (track pictured) formed to the east of Puerto Rico, becoming the only subtropical cyclone to form in the North Atlantic in January.
- January 19, 2005 - Tropical Storm Daren reached its peak with 85 km/h (50 mph) winds in the open Indian Ocean. Daren did not affect land.
- January 20, 1997 - Tropical Storm Hannah reached its peak with winds of 95 km/h (60 mph) in the open Pacific Ocean. Hannah did not affect land.
- January 21, 1918 - The 1918 Mackay cyclone hit Mackay, Queensland, Australia, when its central pressure was about 932 hPa (mbar). The storm killed 30 people.
- January 22, 1997 - Cyclone Pancho-Helinda reached its peak with a central pressure of 925 hPa (mbar) in the eastern Indian Ocean.
- January 23, 2005 - Cyclone Ernest hit Madagascar with 130 km/h (80 mph) winds. Ernest killed 19 people on the island.
- January 24, 1974 - Cyclone Wanda (track pictured) hit Queensland, bringing heavy rainfall and floods to the Brisbane area. Wanda killed 16 people and caused over $200 million of damage.
- January 25, 1980 - Cyclone Hyacinthe reached its peak with 130 km/h (80 mph) winds while performing a cyclonic loop to the west of Réunion. Hyacinthe caused a total of over 5700 mm (220 inches) of rain on the island.
- January 26, 1994 - Cyclone Quenton reached its peak with 140 km/h (85 mph) winds in the eastern Indian Ocean. Quenton had no effects on land.
- January 27, 1998 - Cyclone Tiffany reached its peak with winds of 220 km/h (140 mph) to the north of Western Australia. Tiffany dissipated in the open Indian Ocean.
- January 28, 2000 - Cyclone Connie (pictured) reached its peak with a pressure of 928 hPa (mbar), before it struck Réunion and Mauritius, where it dropped up to 400 mm (15.5 inches) of rain.
- January 29, 1989 - Cyclone Firinga passed very close to Réunion at its peak with 165 km/h (105 mph) winds.
- January 30, 1992 - Hurricane Ekeka (pictured) reached hurricane strength to the south of Hawaii, at a latitude of 6.0° N.This makes Ekeka the most southerly hurricane on record, in either the Atlantic or Pacific.
- January 31, 1994 - Cyclone Geralda reached its peak with 270 km/h (165 mph) winds. Geralda struck Madagascar soon after, killing 200 and left half a million people homeless.
