Mercury Industries (Birmingham) Ltd., were founded in 1947 and produced large numbers of bicycles, initially in Birmingham and then in Dudley.

In 1956 the company started to produce the 49c.c., 2 stroke 'Hermes' and the 50c.c. 'Mercette' motor scooters. In 1957 the company produced the 'Grey Streak' motorcycle. It was a lightweight machine that was powered by a 98c.c. Villiers engine and included a 2 speed gearbox. The machine sold for £85.10s.

In the same year the 'Hermes' was replaced by the 'Dolphin' and the 60c.c. 'Whippet 60' scooter was introduced. It was priced at just under £99. The 'Dolphin' was powered by a 98c.c. Villiers engine that used force draught, fan cooling. It had a 2 speed gearbox, a kick starter and sold for £105. Early 1958, saw the introduction of the 'Pippin' scooter and the company moved to Pool Street, Wolverhampton. The 'Pippin' was powered by a 98c.c. Villiers engine, was equipped with a 2 speed gearbox, and sold for £115.10s. Very few were produced as the company was financial difficulties and went into liquidation in March.
