From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Northern and Western Indian family name reflecting the mastery of a brahmin over three of the four vedas (including the Vedic Branch he was born into). Hindu (Brahmin) name from Sanskrit trivedi ‘one that knows the three Vedas’, from tri- ‘three’ + veda ‘(sacred) knowledge’. The Vedas are the oldest sacred texts of the Hindu religion. Three of them are regarded as primary but a fourth one was added later.

Trivedis are found scattered throughout northern and western India and some parts of ancient Afghanistan where they ruled as Brahmin Palas belonging to the Shahi dynasty. Trivedis were considered historically to be very intelligent and sharp minded individuals[citation needed], they were regarded as an elite caste possessing great wisdom and are respected in many parts of India to this day.

Synonymous names include: tripat, tripathi, tripati and travedi.
