[edit] The Setting
Fiona writes a rich world for the characters she creates to live in. The trilogy takes place (for the most part) in the Kingdom of Tallinor which is ruled by the just and fair King Lorys and his wife. Tor, Alyssa and even Merkhud travel all around the kingdom to do the bidding of Lys and to save the world from Orlac. One of the most notable places in the Kingdom, is the Heartwood. Completely surrounded by the Great Forest, whose tendrils extend all around the kingdom, the heartwood cares for its people, and is watched over by the great god; Darmud Coril and the Flames of Firmament. It is the place where the Paladin finally unite, and the Trinity is uncovered.
[edit] The Plot
The story takes place at a time when empowered people are feared and detested. This line of thought, created after the vicious god Orlac, who was stolen as a child from Ordolt (the place of the gods) destroyed an entire city and its people. Although Orlac was sealed away and kept at bay by the Paladin. Nanak, their keeper, knows that he is breaking free and only the Trinity can have a hope of defeating him. Tor, aware of his part to play in the trinity, thanks to his companion Cloot, eventually finds his way to Alyssa. Together they run away to the safety of the Heartwood, but Darmud Coril betrays them at the last, and the Heartwood leads Goth and his merry band of men, right to Alyssa as she gives birth to her children. Later we learn that there were actually three children birthed (Gidyon the eldest, Lauryn the second and Rubyn the third). However, Torkyn believes there were only two, and Alyssa believes all of them were killed. Eventually, through sub-plots and various fallings of the Paladin, Orlac is freed from his prison. However, as he stands victorious, Torkyn Gynt distracts Lys by entering the Bleak. Taking advantage of the moment; Dorgryl, Orlac's uncle being enters Orlac and attempts to control him. The pair live in relative harmony until finally Orlac is left with a choice. He can enter the Heartwood and let the dark being take over, or he can fight back and lose his chance. Orlac chooses to enter the Heartwood, and so Dorgryl/Orlac are left to face the entire Paladin as well as Torkyn Gynt and the Trinity. (Alyssa, by this time, has sacrificed herself to protect her daughter, and has learned that she herself is Lys' daughter). Eventually through the power of them all; they manage to quell Orlac, but Tor, with the knowledge that Orlac is his brother, cannot deal the killing blow. Instead he tries to use the stones to open the way into Ordolt.
