Colin Ball (born 22 April 1948 in an abandoned burnt out Vauxhall in Mitcham, London (then Surrey)), better known as Trigger (because he looks like a horse), is a character in the popular BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses. He is played by Roger Lloyd Pack.

A regular at the Nags Head pub, and old friend of Del Boy, Trigger is a road sweeper, and also appears to dabble in trading. He once supplied Del with paint which Del proceeded to use to decorate his mother's grave with. Only then did Trigger inform him that the paint was used on signs in railway tunnels and therefore, luminous.

Rodney once asked Del where Trigger got his nickname, thinking Trigger was an armed criminal. Del however replies that it's because he looks like an 'orse.

Trigger is quite dull, he speaks in a fairly slow, monotone voice, he is loyal, friendly and kind. However, Trigger's most noticeable trait is that he is stupid beyond belief, verging on insanity. Being so incredibly inane, he seems to treat everyone else the same, as though they have the same sensiblities as him, displayed in one episode where Del had relationship problems with Racquel and a very bad tooth. Whilst talking about the problems with Racquel, Trigger got the subject mixed up, telling him to just "get shot of it," and proceeding to say "I know what it's like, you give 'em pet names, I've done it, but take my advice, go to the dentist and have it taken out." Even the simplest joke can go over his head and he often makes ridiculously stupid statements. Most noticeably of all, he insists on calling Rodney "Dave". This began in the first episode when Del introduced Rodney to Trigger saying "Trig', have you met my brother?"; despite having never met Rodney before Trigger mistakenly answers "Yeah, 'course, alright Dave?". This title appears to have stuck with Trigger and much to Rodney's despair he appears now to have resigned to it.

[edit] Trigger's best bits

  • In one episode, Trigger proudly displays a medal to anyone who will look which he was awarded by the local council for having contributed to the community by using the same brush for the past 20 years. He then proudly holds up the brush and claims "Maintained it for 20 years. This old broom's had 17 new heads and 14 new handles in its time." When Sid inquires how it can be classed as the same brush, Trigger angrily shows him a picture of him receiving the medal and demands "Well there's a picture of it, what more proof do you need?"
  • He claims to have been born in the back seat of an abandoned Vauxhall in Wyvern, Mitcham.
  • When Rodney and Del turn up to a fancy dress party dressed as the 1960s Batman and Robin, only to find it is now a wake for the party's host, Rodney confides in Trigger "We didn't know the fancy dress had been cancelled" to which Trigger replies "Me neither", despite the fact that he is dressed in a black suit and tie, and blends into the crowd. Rodney asks "You mean, that's your costume?" to which Trigger replies "Yeah. I came as a chauffeur. (Thinks) I feel a bit stupid now." He then tells Del & Rodney he didn't think they'd have won the fancy dress competition anyway. He said Rodney's costume was OK, but Del doesn't look anything like Tonto.
  • He believed Albert Einstein managed the Beatles.
  • Del had got a round of drinks in at the Nags Head, and it came to £25. Del, however, only had £5 on him. Del then sold a hair dryer to Mike (the barman) for £15, owing him £10 for the drinks. Del told Mike that he would have a bet with him, and that if Del could make Mike turn his hands over without touching him then he would only owe £5 for the drinks, if he lost he'd owe £10. Mike comments, "But you allready owe me a tenner", to which Del says "Well, nether of us are any worse off then." Mike then accepts the bet, while Trigger looks on. Del told Mike to put his hands out and Mike obliged, to which Del say "No, the other way" and Mike turned his hands over. Del laughed and said "Told you!" and slapped the fiver in Mike's open hand. Later on in the same scene, Rodney approached the bar to order some the same drinks, but only has £20. Trigger said "Dave, I bet I can make you turn your hands over without touching you." and played the same joke on Rodney as he witnessed Del Boy play on Mike. Trigger said "Told you!" and placed a fiver in Rodney's hand, and walked off, leaving Rodney with £25 to pay for the drinks.
  • He claimed Gandhi had his 15 minutes of fame because "He made one great film and you never heard of him again" (see Ben Kingsley).
  • Waiting to appear as a witness in Del's bankruptcy case, Trigger comments to Denzil "When I go in there, I'll just say I hear voices". When Denzil points out "Trigger, you're not a character witness", Trigger replies "I know. But I still hear voices!"
  • Trigger informs Del that the council tip is open 24 hours a day. When they arrive and it is closed Del demands "I thought you said it was open 24 hours a day!" to which Trigger replies "Yeah, but not at night".
  • When talking to Mike about what Del and Raquel plan on calling their soon-to-be-born child, Trigger tells him, "If it's a girl then they're gonna call it Sigourney, after an actress. If it's a boy, then they're gonna call it Rodney, after Dave"
  • When asked what his mother had written in the "father's name" section of his birth certificate, Trigger replies - "some soldiers."
  • After telling Rodney that he was raised by his grandparents, Trigger is asked where his father had been. Trigger replies that his father died two years before he was born.
  • He got lost on his way to school reunion party in the Nags Head function room when he went to the pub's dance hall by mistake. When asked why he had stood alone in the unlit hall for more than an hour, he explained he thought "we" were waiting to turn the lights on and surprise someone.
  • He tells Mike and Boycie that his Gran was a spirit medium and contacted his dead grandfather. However he said nothing due to the fact that they hadn't talked to each other for the last 15 years of his life.
  • The Liverpool defender Rob Jones was nicknamed Trigger during his time at Liverpool F.C. for his stupidity. Micky Evans of Plymouth Argyle F.C. was also nicknamed Trigger while playing fot the Greens.
  • While recounting their school days it comes to light that Trigger walked into a "mind your head" sign. When someone says "didn't you see it" Trigger replies "Of course I saw it, but back then I couldn't read".
