Tribes (simulation game)

Tribes is a role-playing game produced by Steve Jackson Games. The game focuses on the survival of humanity with play centering on the amount of children a player produces. Unlike most RPGs, the game is meant to be played like a traditional board game with each play session being a self-contained game with winners and losers.

Tribe centers on its namesake, a tribe or tribes of cave-people. The players assume the roles of members of the tribe and try to insure the survival of not only the tribe but also their own bloodlines. This is done by ensuring that the tribe raises as many children as possible. Theoretically, this game can be played by a minimum of four people (two tribes of two), or just two people without competition; however, it is seen as optimal to have around eight players. Each person in a tribe can play the role of hunter, gatherer, or craftsman. Hunter hunts for food; it’s a high risk but high revenue work. Gatherer gathers grains; it’s a safer job compare to hunter but cannot earn much. Craftsman makes a live by selling tools; the quality of life of craftsman is dependent on the success of other members of the tribe are. The tribe(s) wander the game world traveling from area to area, thru the seasons which serve as the rounds within the game.

There are two seasons in each game year, a warm season and a cold season, with a decrease of food production during the cold seasons. Every player do three thing in one season: work, eat and reproduce. Work is based on the role of the tribes-person with the craftsmen producing items and the other two roles harvesting food. While, eating insures the health of the various members. During the seasons, players must insure that enough food is provided for the tribe as well as dealing with random events. Reproduction is chance event where a single member attempts procreation with another tribe member.
