Trentham is a suburb of Stoke-on-Trent, located to the south-west of the city centre and to the south of the neighbouring town of Newcastle-under-Lyme. Although within the city limits, it is mostly separated from the main urban area by surrounding open space and the Trent and Mersey Canal, giving it the feel of a distinct town in its own right. Trentham is not one of the historic "six towns" which comprise the city of Stoke-on-Trent, having joined the federation in the 1922 expansion of the city rather than being part of the initial 1910 grouping. This combination of history and geography, together with the area's significantly different demographics to the rest of the city, is often reflected in a tendency by Trentham residents to consider themselves separate to Stoke-on-Trent rather than a part of it.
Trentham has two Anglican Churches, three Public Houses, a rugby club, two Primary Schools (Priory and Ash Green) and a High School (Trentham High). Also nearby are St. Joseph's College (11-18 VA Catholic school) and St. Joseph's Preparatory School (3-11). The area is one of the most affluent in the city and is the home of several local celebrities such as John Rudge and Lou Macari. It is also the location of Trentham Awakes, one of the region's major leisure and tourist attractions.
Trentham is home to Trentham Gardens and in the area there still remains today 2 very old and large houses, The Stables and The Blacksmith, along with the grounds at Trentham gardens these buildings are still preserved and are over 200 years old.
