[edit] Effectiveness

In a recent test conducted by PC World, Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security came 5th following other popular security suites including Norton, McAfee, Panda and F-Secure. Trend Micro's interface, speed, and features (including an antiphishing toolbar) were better than its malware detection scores. However, this test was conducted before the release of Internet Security 2007 and was tested on Internet Security 2006.[citation needed]

[edit] History

Previous versions of the program from October 2006, are:

  • PC-cillin
  • PC-cillin 2000
  • PC-cillin 2002
  • PC-cillin 2003
  • PC-cillin Internet Security 2004
  • PC-cillin Internet Security 2005
  • PC-cillin Internet Security 2006

Only versions from 2005 onwards are currently still being supported by Trend Micro

PC-cillin 2002 and 2003 are stand-alone virus scanners, while the newer PC-cillin Internet Security bundle offers more features such as anti-spam and an integrated firewall. After PC-cillin 2003, Trend Micro did not offer a stand-alone antivirus program for the consumer market. However, upon installation of the Internet Security product, one can opt to install the virus scanner on its own without the other features.

[edit] Flaws with the program

Recent updates may cause Windows to crash after shutdown. This can cause network and software problems in the future. To prevent this, disable automatic updates on Trend Micro AntiVirus.[citation needed]

On some new Trend Micro AntiVirus updates, you will be advised that a Vulnerability has been found in some aspect of Windows. This is not a new virus, but a newly discovered flaw in Windows, and this should prompt you to visit Windows Update at: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.[citation needed]

Also, in some cases, the Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 Firewall may turn on the "Internet Lock" upon receiving one of these alerts. In these cases, you will cease to be able to use network and internet programs (you won’t be able to view any websites) until you right click the Trend Micro Internet Security 2007 Icon, and deselect the Internet Lock.[citation needed]

Many users don’t understand this. The Emergency Lock prevents you from using your Browser, but does NOT prevent you from connecting to the Internet. To turn Emergency Lock off, you must be connected to the Internet. For Broadband users, this is no real issue, but dial-up users often panic. You can still dial up and connect via your ISP, but you can’t view any web pages. As soon as you are connected, you can turn the Emergency Lock OFF.

Many times Trend Micro may pass over some viruses that are known to be on your computer. For example, it will not detect Spysheriff and the WinAntivirus malwares.
