The Treaty of Gandamak officially ended the first phase of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Afghanistan ceded various frontier areas to Britain to prevent invasion of further areas of the country. It was signed by Sir Pierre Louis Napoleon Cavagnari for the British and the amir, Yakub Khan, for the Afghans on May 26, 1879.
