Trawniki

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trawniki is a village and rural commune in Świdnik County in the Lublin Voivodship of Poland.

During World War II, it was the location of an SS labour camp which sent labour to a nearby industrial plant and trained Eastern European Hiwi (volunteers), for service with Nazi occupation forces in occupied Poland and neighbouring countries. The Hiwi included ethnic Germans from eastern Europe, Ukrainians, Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians and others. Many "Trawniki" took part in Operation Reinhard, the Nazi plan for extermination of the Polish Jews, and/or served at extermination camps.

The Trawniki camp was commanded by Hauptsturmführer Theodor von Eupen. The Hiwi trained there included John Demjanjuk.
