The left hander was the 2003 Texas League Pitcher of the Year. Blackley led the Texas League in 17 wins; was second in ERA (2.61), fourth in strikeouts (144) and fourth in innings pitched (162.1). Seventeen wins are the most by a TL pitcher since Jeff Reardon of the Jackson Mets in 1978.

He participated in the Texas League All-Star game and was named to the World squad in the 2003 MLB All-Star Futures Game at U.S. Cellular Field July 15.

Blackley was named to the Texas League Postseason All-Star Team and named Minor League Pitcher of the Year by the Seattle Mariners. He received the 2003 John Ellis Award by the Seattle Mariners for his community involvement.

In March 2006 Blackley was slated to play in the World Baseball Classic with team Australia but was held back to continue the rehab on his shoulder.

Blackley spent most of 2006 at Double A San Antonio as further rehabilitation. Blackley was promoted to Triple A Tacoma at the end of August.

In June 2006 Blackley faced Roger Clemens in Corpus Christi during Clemens' AA game as Clemens came out of retirement to work his way back to the Houston Astros.

April 1, 2007 saw Blackley sent to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for Jason Ellison, starting the season in Fresno with the AAA Grizzlies.

[edit] Major Leagues

Blackley was first called up to the majors at the end of the 2004 season, thus missing the opportunity to play for the Australian team in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens. He became the sixth Mariners pitcher to start and win their Major League debut. Following the 2004 season Blackley suffered an injury to his labrum and missed all of 2005 but remained on the 40-man roster.
