[edit] One version
The Trauco is a mythical entity which inhabits the woods of Chiloé an island in the south of Chile. It has a powerful magnetism which attracts young and middle-aged women. Some people believe it is an alien from a far distant planet, with a powerful allurement and an intense mental force irresistible to any female.
Whoever is chosen by the trauco, even if she is sleeping, will go to him, believing he is her "knight in shining armor", and fall enraptured at his feet. They never forget this encounter, the experience of making love with the trauco is underscored by young women as something which no man could ever manage.
Men of Chiloé find the trauco boring and since he is of no interest to them he appears to them as a small repugnant man, with an ugly but masculine face. He carries a small stone-headed hatchet strike trees in the forest to symbolize his sexual potency.
[edit] Another version
According to myth, he has a hypnotic gaze, which he will use to mesmerize any unwanted intruders before he kills them. More often, though, he uses it to lull nubile young women into a more receptive state, at which point he takes his liberties with them. Thus, the Trauco is sometimes invoked to explain sudden or unwanted pregnancies, especially in unmarried women. The wife of the Trauco is the wicked Fiura.
