Transposition (chess)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- This article uses algebraic notation to describe chess moves.
A transposition in chess is a position on the board that can be reached by the same piece in more than one way. A simple example: White can move its knight from g1 to g5 by following either sequence of moves: 1.Nf3 2. Ng5 or 1.Nh3 2.Ng5.
Transposition tables are an essential part of a computer chess program.
