[edit] Railways

There are a total of 3,973 kilometers of railways. Of that, 2,888 kilometers is standard gauge, with 283 kilometers of that being electrified and 215 kilometers of that being double tracked. There is also 1,085 kilometers of 1.055 meter narrow gauge track.

[edit] Railway links to adjacent countries

There are connections to Tunisia and Morocco, but both are closed since the '90s. There are no links to Libya, Niger, Mali, Mauritania or Western Sahara.

  • A new 204km railway currently under construction from Tebessa to Ain Nl'Lila. The 8km Alger bypass line between Gue de Constantine and Oued Smar is also being upgraded.
  • 18 May 2006 SNTF is to spend $US5 billion (about R30bn) in the next five years on improvements. It has awarded a 39-month-duration contract worth €248.3 million to a joint Algerian and Spanish consortium which will double the Annaba-Ramdane Djamal portion of the 626km Algiers-Annaba line and upgrade the track for 160km/h operation.

SNTF is to electrify 420km of the route west of Annaba at 25kVAC, including the branches from Ramdane Djamel to Skikda (19km) and Beni Mansour to Bejaia (88km), as well as the line from Khemis Miliana to Oran (303km).

  • 18 May 2006 - By early 2009, it is hoped to open the first 16.3km section of the new light rail line in Algeria’s capital city, linking Carl du Ruisseau to Bordj El Kiffan. [1]
  • Under construction: there are 3 projects to build tramway networks in 3 major cities: Alger,Oran and Constantine.

There are 71,656 kilometers of paved roads including 640 kilometers of expressways and 32,344 kilometers of unpaved roads for a total road system of 104,000 kilometers.

[edit] Pipelines

There are 456 kilometers of crude oil pipeline, 298 kilometers of refined petroleum pipeline, and 2,948 kilometers of natural gas pipeline. There are also 4 gas exportation pipelines, two existing ones to Spain and Italy and 2 under construction, the first between Oran and Almería, Spain and the second between Annaba and Sardinia, Italy. Both pipelines will be extended to France and Germany.

There are 136 airports. 54 of these have paved runways. 9 of these have runways over 3000 m. 27 of these have runways between 2500 and 3000 m. 12 have runways between 1500 and 2500 m. 5 have runways between 1000 and 1500 m. 1 has a runway under 1000 m. 82 have unpaved runways. 2 have runways between 2500 and 3000 m. 23 have runways between 1500 and 2500 m. 38 have runways between 1000 and 1500 m. 19 have runways under 1000 m. There is 1 heliport.
