[edit] Plot Summary
Blanche is busy making the house appear perfect for the arrival of her sister, Virginia. Surprisingly, though, she claims to hate her, and only wants to make the house look good to impress her. Rose doesn't believe that someone could hate their own sister, but Blanche reveals that Virginia has always loved getting Blanche in trouble so she would look better in her father's eyes. As children, Virginia even electrocuted Blanche with a Christmas tree star! But as Blanche wishes she could have hired Nancy Reagan's interior decorator, Dorothy comes in carrying a baby! The baby is the son of the girls' neighbors, and they have been asked to be his baby-sitter. Blanche panics, claiming that all babies do is make a mess-but Virginia comes to the door and ends her fear. As the two chat, they seem to be getting along fine-but Blanche thinks that Virginia is only being nice because she wants something. As Rose and Dorothy engage in various baby-themed hijinks, Virginia takes Blanche out for dinner and reveals why she came to Miami-she is dying, and needs Blanche's kidney to live. Blanche is distraught, and doesn't know what to do. She raises the question to Dorothy and Blanche, trying to make excuses- "what if I need one? Or I have to give the other one away?" Dorothy and Rose can appreciate the problem, saying that it would be easier to choose if was for their children. In the end, though, Blanche realizes that her petty squabbles with Virginia can end if she takes the first step. She leaves to give up her kidney, and Dorothy and Rose give the baby back. When Blanche returns home, though, she reveals that her kidney could not be used- her blood vessels were too small, but another donor was found in the nick of time. It belonged to an elderly schoolteacher ("the wildest thing that ever passed through those was Ovaltine!"). Virginia's life is saved, and Blanche looks forward to getting to know her sister better.
[edit] Trivia
- First appearance of Sheree North as Blanche's sister Virginia.
[edit] Memorable Quotes
- Virginia: (speaking about her and Blanche's other sister Charmaine) She never could help Mama because she had heart flutters and she never could take gym class, no, because she had a tipped uterus and she never did any housework because she had a spastic colon. Now, she has attached kidneys.
Blanche: That girl is some kind of mutant.
- Blanche: (speaking about Virginia) It was the day before Christmas and we were playing and she jiggled the tree and the star fell off and broke. So she told me to pick it up and put it on my finger. And I did. Then she plugged it in.
- (wondering why someone could hate their own sister)
Rose: Maybe it's Southern.
Blanche: Sleeping with your brothers is Southern!
- Blanche: I need both of my kidneys. You know what'll happen if I give her one? My ankles'll swell, my eyes'll puff up. I'll look just like the Pillsbury Doughboy!
- Rose: The doctor says it's the first time he's ever been called because a baby was sleeping in the day. And then I think he called me an idiot.
