Transmission is a free, lightweight BitTorrent client. It features a simple interface on top of a cross-platform back-end. The software is open source (MIT License) and runs on Mac OS X (Cocoa interface), Linux/NetBSD/FreeBSD/OpenBSD (GTK+ interface) and BeOS/ZETA (native interface).

Transmission uses a smaller amount of system resources than many other BitTorrent clients (such as Azureus). The project aims to strike a balance between providing useful functionality without feature bloat. For this reason, Transmission is less fully featured than other clients. Keeping the interface simple and intuitive on all platforms is a key design goal.

Daily OS X builds and source "tarballs" are available online. The project has a forum where users can discuss support issues and make features requests. They also have an IRC channel, #transmission , located on the Freenode Network.

[edit] Criticism

As of version 0.6.1, Transmission does not strictly adhere to the complete BitTorrent specification. Its behaviour has led to the client being banned from several private trackers. There has been a heated discussion regarding the matter on the Transmission forum about whether or not it is really a problem,[1] but this has been fixed in the branch of the upcoming 0.7.0
