Trans-Canada Trophy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Trans-Canada Trophy, often referred to as the McKee Trophy, is the oldest aviation award in Canada, having been established in 1927 by J. Dalzell McKee. In 1926, McKee, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, accompanied by Squadron Leader Earl Godfrey (Hall of Fame 1978) of the RCAF, flew from Montreal, Quebec, to Vancouver, British Columbia, in a Douglas MO-2B seaplane.

In appreciation of the courtesies afforded him by the RCAF and the Ontario Provincial Air Services, McKee endowed an aviation award in his name. The trophy was deeded to the Crown in the person of the Department of National Defence, which controlled all aspects of aviation at the time, both military and civil. In 1971, the administration of the McKee trophy was transferred to the Canadian Aeronautics and Space Institute.

The trophy is awarded for outstanding achievement in the field of aerospace operations, particularly in pioneering as aircrew, new areas and applications in aerospace. The achievement may be a single brilliant exploit within the past year or a sustained high level of performance in recent years. The achievement shall be of contemporary significance and the recipient shall be or have been a Canadian citizen at the time of the achievement.

From 1964 to 1983, the trophy was displayed at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa, Ontario. Since 1983 it has been on display at Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame, now located in the city of Wetaskiwin, Alberta.
