Trainmaster

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A trainmaster is term for a superintendent or supervisor of a US freight railroad or a section of one. The trainmaster is responsible for seeing that policies of the rail company are enforced, and for the way they are enforced. The actions of the[a] trainmaster are seen as policies and practices that emanate directly from, and are sanctioned by, the occupants of the railroad’s boardroom and executive suite.

As such they are responsible for train movements, locomotive assignments, crew assignments, personnel management, discipline, derailments and more.

In the past, trainmasters were promoted brakemen or conductors who retained their union seniority in case they decided that railroad management was not for them.
