Tractor unit
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A tractor unit, traction unit, road tractor or prime mover (Australian English) is a heavy-duty vehicle, usually with a large diesel engine and two or three axles. Three-axle prime movers often have the engine drive through both rear axles. These tractors are designed most often for the transport of freight of some kind over a significant distance, to pull long semi-trailers (forming a semi-trailer truck) or road trailers. These trailers are have also been expanded into trucks called Road Trains in the country of Austrailia. The trailers in use in Austrailia include flatbeds, containers, and modified railroad boxcars.
In the United Kingdom this type of "tractor" is often called an "artic [for articulated] cab".
