- 1855 – Eugene V. Debs, labor leader, a founding member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, founder of the American Railway Union, and who was arrested during the Pullman strike in Chicago, Illinois, is born (d. 1926).
- 1893 – Raymond Loewy, industrial designer who worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad designing the shape of equipment such as the GG1, is born (d. 1986).
