- 1829 – George Stephen, first president of Canadian Pacific Railway Limited 1881-1888, is born (d. 1921).
- 1935 – Union Pacific Railroad's refurbished M-10001 (pictured) is dedicated as the City of Portland passenger train.
- 1935 – The New Haven Railroad introduces its double-ended Comet passenger train between Boston, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island.
- 1955 – C. P. Couch, president of Kansas City Southern Railway 1939-1941, dies (b. 1890).
