- 1881 – The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad connects to El Paso, Texas.
- 1884 – The Pine Bluff and Swan Lake Railway, in Arkansas (later to become part of the Cotton Belt Railroad), is incorporated.
- 1905 – The Pennsylvania Railroad inaugurates the fastest freight train schedule in the world, operating between Chicago, Illinois, and New York City in 18 hours.
- 1944 – Michael R. Haverty, president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway 1989-1995 and president of the Kansas City Southern Railway 1995-present, is born.
