- 1853 – Cecil Rhodes, instrumental in the development of a Cape-Cairo railway route, is born (d. 1902).
- 1942 – The multiple unit passenger trainsets used by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad on the Prospector between Denver, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, Utah, are removed from revenue service; the train is now equipped with standard locomotives and unpowered passenger cars.
- 1999 – until July 31, 24 trains will help moving the German government from Bonn to Berlin (480 km).
- 2005 – Kansas City Southern Railway names Francisco Javier Rion as the new CEO, succeeding interim CEO Vicente Corta Fernandez, for its subsidiary Grupo Transportación Ferroviaria Mexicana.
