- 1866 – The Atlantic and Pacific Railroad in the United States is chartered by a special act of Congress.
- 1903 – Frederick J. Kimball (pictured), American civil engineer who was instrumental in the formation of Norfolk and Western, dies (b. 1844).
- 1903 – Construction begins on the Baghdad Railway with the 200 km segment between Konya and Bulgurlu in the Ottoman Empire (present day Turkey).
- 1996 – Ron Burns becomes president of Union Pacific Railroad.
