- 1877 – Cornelius Vanderbilt (pictured), American financier who created the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad from the merger of several smaller New York railroads, dies (b. 1794).
- 1948 – Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad and Southern Pacific Railroad debut a new lightweight passenger car consist for the Golden State passenger train between Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles, California.
- 2000 – A northbound BM92 multiple unit and a southbound passenger train headed by a Di 3 locomotive collides on Norway's Rørosbanen line near Åsta station, killing 19 people.
- 2005 – Bombardier receives a contract from SNCF for €350 million to build 100 new regional trainsets.
