- 1901 – Donald Gordon, president of Canadian National Railway 1950-1966, is born (d. 1969).
- 1905 – Long Island Rail Road inaugurates electric operations on the Rockaway Beach Division connecting Far Rockaway and Valley Stream.[1]
- 2000 – Amtrak's Acela Express (pictured) service between Boston, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C., is inaugurated.
- 2001 – Seven members of the CCFE (Communauté des chemins de fer européens) leave to form EIM (European Infrastructure Managers).
