- 1847 – The Mohawk and Hudson Railroad, a predecessor of the New York Central Railroad, officially changes its name to Albany and Schenectady Railroad.
- 1851 – The Albany and Susquehanna Railroad, in New York state, is chartered.
- 1887 – Alexander Mitchell, president of Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad 1864-1887, dies (b. 1817).[1]
- 1888 – Thomas Crampton, English steam locomotive builder, dies (b. 1816).
