TR-85 is a Romanian main battle tank. It is a drastically modified version of the Soviet T-55 with a new turret, a new MAN German diesel engine (the same engine as on the Leopard 1) tank, and a completely redesigned suspension, stabilised main armament, muzzle reference system and thermal sleeve and laser and thermal acquisition system. The tank is equipped with laser warning receivers, which are able to pick up reflected laser radiation. So even if the tank is not lased but there are LRF/LD in the area, the crew will be warned. There are 12 smoke grenades and a thermal trap. For the main gun the newly designed 100mm APFSDS round BM-412Sg gives a penetration of 450mm at over 1 Km.
The Romanian Land Forces have 1350 of them in the inventory. TR-85 M1 is the modernised version of the TR-85, followed up by the TR-85-M2.
