[edit] Deletion

Hi, TPK. Why did you delete Talk:Goods and Services Tax (Australia)? There was no reason for doing this. - Ta bu shi da yu 10:26, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Same with Image talk:Childrenoverboardboat.jpg. I have restored this. - Ta bu shi da yu 10:33, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)
There is literally no reason to remove a talk page only. I realise you did what you think is right, but along the way you killed off my contributions in the history. I have no personal beef with you over this, and I think you do good work, but please don't remove talk pages of articles. It's similar to editing other's comments - not advisable and frowned upon in general. - Ta bu shi da yu 08:43, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)
That's cool. Incidently, sorry if it looks like I was coming after you with a big stick, that was never my intention! - Ta bu shi da yu 08:54, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] ACOTW

Sorry, about the hubbub I caused over your change to ACOTW. Hopefully we will get it sorted out soon.

On the similar topic, I noticed you set up the original /History page for ACOTW. How did you caculate byte size for articles. Did you import to word and count that byte-size, or save the .html and caculate the byte size, or a method my marvellous brain cannot yet come up with. I'd just like to be consistent with the calculations.--ZayZayEM 07:58, 24 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] How to advertise a policy issue?

I have proposed a Wikipedia Simple Guide to indicating pronunciation. The proposal has been:

Are there any other ways of advising language-oriented Wikipedians of this proposal and eliciting their advice and participation? Thanks. --NathanHawking 21:37, 2004 Nov 3 (UTC)

[edit] Alamein diagram

Kudos - it's excellent - and a big improvement on the last one - and particularly the terrible one that the other person did. Any chance of some for the other lines? Ambi 12:30, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] vandalize?

so you send me a message "Do not vandalise Killian memos." even though i've never been on that page and i've never made any changes there... and no, it is not because i share my i.p. address - which i don't, it's static and it's mine - furthermore, the history page of Killian memos doesn't even show my ip address.... are you trying to get some attention or just not sure what you're doing? (lookig at some of the other message on this page i'm inclined to the last...)

(Unsigned message from 217.79.38.87).

who i am is clearly stated under the message above and no, i'm not any other i.p. address. when accusing people of vandalizing, you might want to leave a slightly more ellaborate message than the "do not vandalize <whateverpage>" you left.... short accusive messages like that do tend to make people less friendly - especially when then also possibly wrongly delivered. :) appologies for any hurt feelings

[edit] Welcoming Committee

Dear TPK,

Thankyou for your kind welcoming committee template post on my talk page. However as much as your warm greeting was appreciated, I have been here for some time now and am well familiar with Wikipedia's policies, protocols, and formats, including signing my name on talk pages and formatting articles, as you can see from my contributions. I am also familiar with WikiProject Melbourne, but don't have the time or inclination to participate officially, as most of my articles seem to be deleted/heavily modified by more devout users with more time and factual knowledge anyway.

Could I trouble you for a more detailed explanation of why you erased my article on the area of Syndal and made it a disambiguation page please? Granted, I incorrectly categorised it as a suburb of Melbourne when Syndal is not technically a suburb, however it is an area of Melbourne and the information presented in the article had merit to the subject. From your edit summary it would appear that you removed all information on Syndal simply because it is not a suburb - this seems odd to me. I would appreciate if you could take a moment to explain this to me in further detail.

Thanks.

[edit] Syndal

Thanks for taking the time to offer me your opinions on the Syndal matter. This leads me to a tricky point which, as a comparitively new Wikipedian, I've managed to avoid so far: You believe that an article on a local area/shopping strip does not merit its own article because it isn't technically a suburb. I disagree. Now, despite the fact that you are the more experienced user, one would logically say that we should bow to policy on this matter - is there anything in Wikipedia's policy arguing for or against such an article? If so, one might argue that there are a LOT of articles out there that merit deletion - I've seen several other small, non-notable Melbourne areas and shopping strips on Wikipedia so far. And if there is no precedent for this situation, then I would be inclined to revert the article, which may lead to you re-reverting it, and so on.

As the more experienced Wikipedian, I ask you this seperate question: In the case of a disagreement about an article's merit where no policy precedent can be found, what is the best way to proceed to avoid a rampant edit-war?

Vaelor 03:09, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me, and likewise for rationally discussing this with me. I figure there's no point throwing a tantrum like an angry teenager over something like this, particularly on an "unmoderated" forum like Wikipedia, where the best outcome we could hope for in such a case would be a petty edit war of this and probably any other similar articles until one of us got bored and left. =)
I see your point here though - there doesn't seem to be any black & white, definable policy on how to handle a situation like this. I've just had a similar problem with articles on non-notable companies - one thing I'm coming to learn about Wikipedia is that it's all grey areas, hardly anything seems to set in stone and everything is interpretative. You don't see a lot of that on the internet, it takes some getting used to!
Anyways, I have taken your advice and posted on the Australian Wikipedians Noticeboard, in an attempt to get some sort of democratic vote or feedback on the matter, since there doesn't seem to be any other precedent to work with. If I get a resounding no in response to the keeping of these sorts of articles, I'll bow to the majority vote and leave this alone, but if the response is positive, or completely split down the middle with no hope of determining a majority opinion, I'm going to revert the Syndal article.
Thanks again for taking the time to explain your position on this matter with me rather than just ignoring my enquiries or telling the newb to screw off. =)

[edit] AFL Medals/Awards

Aren't we missing some (for the year pages)?

What would you think about adding the Rising Star Award and Norm Smith Medal, for starters? Ambi 11:05, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Ah, good! A list of the Rising Star winners can be found at this site. Ambi 11:46, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

[edit] AFL season pages

Here's a test page - 1970, though I realised afterward it should've come under the VFL What do you think? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Football_League_season_1970 Paul 05:50, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

A bit more added to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_Football_League_season_1970. Only linked to a venue once, otherwise it pushes the page over 30k (How important is that? Some the later seasons are over 30k anyway)

[edit] AFL template

I removed the category from the template because the template was starting to get used on non club pages so the category wasn't really appropriate for all of them. The other thing is that the template itself appears in the category, which seems to annoy some people (someone removed the categories from a template I created for that reason).

Nothing really major, I just thought I'd tidy it up. Shane King 01:00, Nov 14, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] The Humungous Image Tagging Project

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

[edit] Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking.
