[edit] Thanks for the welcome.

I've been around for some time now, but thanks for the welcome anyway. I'm afraid I an't contribute all that much to wikipedia, but I do try.

--Kasperl 11:06, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)

As do we all in the face of the real world :) TPK 11:17, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks from me as well. I don't know how much I'll end up changing, but I'll try to do my part. You were certainly attentive, by the way - when your message appeared I'd been here for a good 30 minutes. Nice to know there's people out there looking out for people like me...(newcomers of course)

[edit] Random page experiment

The idea is good, I think. But I myself am not able to get into organizing something like this now. There's too much that I see that needs to be done in areas I know about, and everything takes more time and more research than I ever expect, to the point that I find I usually can't get anything at all serious done except on the weekend. So I fiddle a bit with comments and VfD instead. But I see how much garbage there is in Wikipedia in certain areas (and where other web material is often equally atrocious which partly explains it) and that is where I want my efforts to go and I don't want to get sidetracked into something else altogether. So you are welcome to take my idea if you want and to run with it. One thing it might do is to provide a forum where comments about particular general practices might come out in the open, things like labelling articles as stubs, those hideous spoiler warnings (fanatically used in Wikipedia far more than on any web site so far as I can see), lack of documentation and different ways of documentation and so forth. Jallan 17:07, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Well I have some time up my sleeve. Although I would like to be doing more article-related editing, I think this would still be worthwhile enough to spend some time on. I'll think up a proposal and get it out on VP at the very least. TPK 02:39, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Interpretation as vandalism

Why did you interpret my removal of the googolgon link as vandalism?? Googolgon is on its last period on Vfd and I want to make sure the links are set up correctly. 66.32.244.71 00:36, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Knee-jerk reaction, I think I need more coffee. You were perfectly right. TPK 00:41, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)
For the record, Googolgon seems to have survived VFD intact... somehow.

[edit] Melb Suburbs Infobox

I saw you in RC playing about with some test pages :) It appears to be working! I also saw your design at User:TPK/Design which looks great as well! Do you think its a good time to (a) start using the template and (b) to make the template work, start naming all suburbs as <Suburb>, Victoria? -- Chuq 10:00, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Yes, yes I do. T.P.K. 03:51, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Continued at WikiProject Melbourne/Suburbs.

Yeah, I noticed Ambi updated the table in Burwood East, Victoria, so I thought I would replace it with the infobox seeing as it was being updated. I put it on a few other pages after that, but not too many, in case the parameters change name or something which would cause them to break.. so you dont think we should use the 4x4 box that I posted on the Wikiproject page then? -- Chuq 11:21, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Well IMHO it's too large with too much repetition, but I can also see how the 3x3 can get too crowded. Frankly I'm stumped as to what to do. T.P.K. 05:22, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
It's a pain isn't it.. How about using the existing infobox for suburbs for which it will fit, and create a 2nd infobox that passes the whole value through to the cell like you suggested (so multiple suburbs per cell can fit, or for special cases like suburbs adjacent to Port Phillip). We can use the 2nd one until we can come up with something else, or keep using it if it is the preferred option? -- Chuq 11:40, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I can live with that. I think though that we should aim to get more content in the articles, rather than getting bogged down by exactly which table to use, though it is still an important part of the articles. T.P.K. 13:02, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
True. However this is where I fall down as I don't know anything about 99% of the suburbs... you might have noticed by some of my edits last night (which you've since fixed) at Wikipedia:WikiProject Melbourne/Suburbs. -- Chuq 01:57, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Request for help

You did offer...a nice little question though. How can I get these to display on separate lines? It doesn't seem to work if they're directly below each other. Or is this intentional (i.e. to prevent use of it-->separated paragraphs-->easier reading)?

[edit] Deleting Infobox MelbourneSuburbTable

Yeah, might as well delete it (I don't think any suburbs still point to it). The Port Phillip Bay situation is another one of those weird ones, its a shame we can't colour it with the template, at least not easily. Maybe use MelbSuburbBox2 and put an image in those cells? Or am I making it more difficult? :)

By the way, I was going to make the new templates just SuburbBox1, SuburbBox2 etc. and make Melbourne and Victoria variables as well, to make the boxes usable by other cities as well. Perhaps after we've got it all sorted we could try to "sell" the format to other city projects. -- Chuq 03:26, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

OK, I've deleted it (it wasn't in use by any suburbs). Actually, I think there are a few things the WikiProject could sell - the suburb table, the railway table, the... well there's bound to be more eventually! As for PFB, if there were an image of some kind that screamed "This is a large body of water!" that would do nicely, though I guess the word "Bay" on the end gives it away... it's a shame that the background colouring won't work. Prehaps the table should be subst:'ed onto the page and the colour added manually? Not the best, but it's the only way it seems...
Snipped table to avoid category.

[edit] AFL

Firstly, thanks for fixing up the templates for the AFL pages. It's been on my to-do list for a couple of days, but I'm lazy. Have you seen List of footballers (Australian rules football)? I've been trying to fix up some of these, but basically all of those I haven't got to are in need of some serious help, and as I'm not the biggest football fan, any help would be appreciated.

Secondly, I've created Wikipedia:Australian wikipedians' notice board, ruthlessly plagiarising the Irish wikipedians' idea. There's so many Australia-related articles in need of help, so I figure it could be good if we all got together and tried to give them some help, like we have with the Melbourne ones. Ambi 05:46, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

If you know of any other Australia-related articles that we're missing/need help/images/looking over, could you note them down on the message board page? I took a cursory glance around to find those, but I'm sure there's more.
I think it'd be good to get articles on the AFL seasons, and as many players as possible. I can't promise I'll be of much use, but I'll try and help out. I was thinking of creating yearly Brownlow Medal pages, with those who got over, say, 10 votes. This page has all that information, apparently going back to the beginnings of the medal.
One possibility with season articles could be to take a similar method as we've done with the railway stations. I don't think it'd take too long to set up a basic format, get the end-of-season ladder from somewhere, the premiers, and the Brownlow and Coleman medallists. In any case, we could just start with the last three, and add the tables in as we went along. Then, down the line some, we could add writeups of the seasons themselves. Ambi 06:23, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Sounds good to me T.P.K. 06:26, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I think the template is coming along nicely. You might want to adjust the alignment of the left column, however - they're a little bit close together. Also, what format to use for the season articles? Australian Football League season, 2004, AFL season 2004, 2004 AFL season? Ambi 08:28, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
I would be tempted to follow AFL season XXXX. I'll keep tweaking the table and hopefully get it out soon. I would like to get images of the guernseys though, instead of the colour bar, as well as the team logos, but I can't find any of the first (in a decent iconic form that is) and the I'm not sure about the copyright status of the latter, so... I don't think I could create colour bars for all the teams, at least not with my Photoshop skills. T.P.K. 08:34, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Looking at AFL, you will probably need to use the full name in case of ambiguity -- Chuq 11:02, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Good point, though Australian Football League season 2004 looks a little ugly, we don't wan't people thinking it's about those damn Americans! T.P.K. 13:11, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Quick question...

What does COTW mean? - Ta bu shi da yu 12:20, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

P.S. Could I get some help with Wikipedia:WikiProject Sydney?

[edit] Mayors and Lord Mayors

Would you be able to take a look at the formatting of List of Mayors and Lord Mayors of Melbourne? I'm currently in the process of creating the Sydney equivalent, but the formatting on both of them is really ugly, and could do with some work, and you're better at this stuff than I. Ambi 05:22, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks! It's not the prettiest page in the world, but it's a lot better now than before. Ambi 06:27, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)
It's a shame the information the council had online has disappeared - there were complete biographies of all of the mayors - unfortunately I didn't think I'd have to save a copy, now it's just a blank page... T.P.K. 06:33, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Port Phillip

Bayside Here Thanks for the welcome note - I actually sent you an email - as I am on a mission to correct Port Phillip (not Port Phillip Bay) - it is a large expanse of water which contains may bays. I was after help disambuating the Port Phillip main page and correcting this incorrect entries on the Melbourne Project Pages

Looking forward to being part of the community

[edit] To-do list

Thanks for the refactoring - much better now. Ambi 22:22, 28 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Sysop

Thanks TPK :) Yeah, more power, more responsibility hey :-/ Oh well. it'll be handy when i do those typo's during suburb page moves now I guess, though I think they've all been done! -- Chuq 04:17, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Problems with an administrator

Hi TPK: I'm having problems dealing with a biased administrator User:Jayjg. See history and Talk page at Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights for an example. He follows me around, reverts many edits dealing with the Mideast, redirects pages and nominates pages for Votes for deletion in an effort to promote his Zionist POV on Wikipedia pages. What can be done about admins who abuse Wikipedia NPOV policy and harass other Wikipedians? Alberuni 17:45, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me. I continue to have problems with this insufferable POV pushing hypocrite who relentlessly manipulates Wikipedia pages to promote his extremist Zionist vision of the world and blatantly violates the NPOV rule. His agenda is clearly stated on his User page (reprinted below) where he hopes to rally his gang of thugs to his censorship battles. He claims to be maintaining Wikipedia rules but he is actually intent on forcing his POV on Wikipedia and driving people with whom he disagrees out of Wikipedia. His revolting political ideology aside, his mentality and behavior on Wikipedia is contemptible and destructive. Alberuni 15:25, 20 Oct 2004 (UTC)

User:Jayjg From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Wikipedia is regularly inundated with POV warriors who decide that what the project really needs is for someone to come along and re-write all articles of interest to them from their own POV, which they believe is the "TRUTH". These POV warriors ignore all previous Talk: which has painstakingly arrived at NPOV articles through a process of negotiation among proponents of multiple POVs. When thwarted in their efforts, they typically resort to grave breaches of Wikiquette, frequently attacking those who oppose them, and refusing to propose changes on Talk: pages. When pushed, they continually revert to their re-write, insisting that all who disagree must justify any disagreements in Talk:, rather than themselves justifying their POV changes.

One of my important roles on Wikipedia is to protect Wikipedia from these POV warriors until they understand what NPOV is, become familiar with Wikipedia norms, and either decide they can actually work within the Wikipedia paradigm, or leave for other channels in which they can evangelize their POV.

Articles currently under attack in this way:

Israeli terrorism Sabra and Shatila Massacre Operation Days of Penitence 1982 Invasion of Lebanon State terrorism Other articles being ruthlessly POVd

Medical Aid for Palestinians Palestine Children's Relief Fund Al Mezan Center for Human Rights Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jayjg"

[edit] Welcoming anons

TPK, I went to welcome an anon, but found you had been scolding him/her for vandalism. How do you go about finding out that an anon is a vandal? I couldn't tell and I thought I should just welcome and encourage the anon. Are the IP addresses sometimes used by multiples? Your guidance could help here. Tom - Talk 07:47, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thanks. I've been thinking of joining the Welcoming Committee. I don't exactly understand how all these things work, but I will try it out. Tom - Talk 16:55, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)
