[edit] Melbourne-Sydney rivalry

The two largest cities in Australia—Melbourne, capital of the State of Victoria, and Sydney, capital of the State of New South Wales—have, since the foundation of the younger Melbourne in the 1830s, been considered rivals in many respects. Both cities have enjoyed positions of material prosperity from which they stood above the other, while both Melburnians and Sydneysiders are willing to extol the virtues of their city over their northern and southern rival respectively.
