[edit] Rules of the Game

Town Golf is a game for 2 to 100 players, and is roughly based on the regular game of Golf. The main variation is that Town Golf, like the name suggests, must be played in a town, city, or suburban region. Hamlets, municipalities, burgs, and whistle-stops are also possible locations.

Town Golf is simpler than regular golf, and it involves only one "hole". The "hole" is often a local, easily identifiable land mark, and not necessarily an actual hole in the ground. Common holes include signs, buildings, vehicles, or people. Like in Golf, players use golf clubs to hit golf balls towards the "hole." The players take turns until all players have reached the destination. Once all balls have hit the hole, players tally the strokes that they used to reach the hole. The player with the fewest strokes is the winner.

One aspect of Town Golf that makes it particularly interesting, is that there are many more hazards than in regular golf. Depending on how conscientious the players are, hazards can include any items that might be broken or damaged by a golf ball such as a vehicle, window, or person. The hazards of Town Golf bear far stronger consequences than simply loosing a ball in a pond like in regular Golf. When hit, some hazards in Town Golf inflict fines of up to $5,000. Players avoid hazards by taking shorter strokes, and paying particular attention to where they are hitting the ball. Town Golf requires greater precision than regular Golf because of these hazards.

Town Golf originated in July, 2006, in the town of Grenada, CA. Its creators were Gregory Clark and Randall Wetzig, of Grenada. The game was discovered when the young men were looking for something to do in an otherwise slow town. Originally, they were interested in merely driving the ball as far as possible, but due to the hazards of Town Golf, the object of the game quickly changed to precision of strokes.

The term "Town Golf" was coined on July 2, 2006 by Randall Wetzig. The first winner of a game of Town Golf was Gregory Clark on July 2, 2006 at 8:25pm.
