Tower Defense games have been around since before Starcraft. I'm having issues re-wording the article to reflect this. --Konoko 22:20, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

Tower Defense or TD for short, is a genre of custom games, or non-regulated games with player determined rules. The objective of a Tower Defense game is to defend an area from waves of enemies that move along a path -- set by the designer or created by the player -- by building attacking towers.

The towers in Tower Defense games are used to eliminate enemies to protect a specific area. Most towers have a unique aspect, such as missles that to splash damage, or snipers that to long range damage but fire slowly. In order to survive one must place these towers strategically to most effectively eliminate their targets. Most TD's will not allow players to block the path of the targets.
Towers usually have a cost associated with them equal to their effectiveness. A simple tower that only affects one target for little damage may cost 5 gold, while a missle tower that does splash damage to multiple targets may cost 20 gold.

These games are not created by Blizzard, the developer who produced Warcraft III. They're created by players using the Warcraft III World Editor, a map construction program that is free with Warcraft III. This allows players to develop a variety of different towers, enemies and paths, as well as incorporate themes of their favorite subjects or topics.
by using one of Warcraft III's various allowable attacks. There is no standard appearance of a tower. Players can use any of the objects found in the game to become a tower, whether it be an actual representation, such as a Scout Tower, or a more abstract one, such as a fence post or rock. The Towers often cost resources, such as gold; however, since players create these games, there is no standard among them. To create these towers, the player must select their builder unit, a character with no role other than building the towers, select the tower they desire, and place it strategically on the map to most effectively eliminate their targets. Towers are usually categorized by either damage, attack type, cost, or armor. Often times, if a tower is placed in such a way that the enemy cannot move, it will spontaneously be destroyed to allow a fair game between the opponent and the player.
That's not even true! People (like me) have also programmer TD games from scratch, and not ALL of them were based off of WCIII. They don't have to be made with the WCIII map editor. (When I made my TD, I had never even played WCIII, and I am still yet to play it.)
