Toussaint Dubois

Toussaint Dubois was born in France. He traveled to America with LaFayette to fight in the Revolutionary War. After that war, he settled near Vincennes, Indiana, becoming a trader. DuBois married Jeannette Boneau, who died in 1800. His second wife was Jane Baird.

Captain DuBois commanded the Company of Spies and Guides in the Indiana Militia at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. He also served in the War of 1812.

DuBois drowned in 1816 while crossing the Little Wabash River, in Illinois, on his way back from St. Louis, Missouri. He was buried in Vincennes.

The Toussaint DuBois house in Lawrenceville, Illinois, served as the seat of government after the formation of Lawrence County, Illinois in 1821.
