"Tourniquet" is a song performed by the alternative rock band Evanescence. The song was track six on their debut album Fallen.
"Tourniquet" was originally written and performed by Soul Embraced, a Christian death metal band. When Soul Embraced drummer Rocky Gray joined Evanescence, Evanescence did their own adaptation of the song. Evanescence's adaptation has a second verse added. Soul Embraced's version is called "My Tourniquet", but was changed to "Tourniquet" for the three demo versions and Fallen version for Evanescence.
“ | A lot of our songs are written in a way that you could take them to mean several different things. That one was written by our drummer Rocky [Gray], who was in a Christian death metal band before he joined us. He told me that it is coming from a Christian standpoint, but it's about suicide. It's from the perspective of someone who has just committed suicide and it's about the controversy in Christianity that if you commit suicide, will you go to heaven or hell? If all sins are forgiven after accepting Christ, why would there be an exception? | ” |
In the demo versions, a clip from Baz Luhrmann's movie William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet is played during the bridge and the line "I long to die!" is heard clearly. In the Fallen version, Evanescence lead singer Amy Lee screams that same line, as she confirmed in a 2004 interview.
