Touchstone (Garth Nix character)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Touchstone is a character from Garth Nix's Old Kingdom trilogy. He is a central character in the first book, Sabriel, and appears in all three parts of the trilogy.
[edit] History
Touchstone was a bastard prince, the son of the Queen of the Old Kingdom and a nobleman. He was the childhood playmate of Rogirek, the man who became Kerrigor. He was present when Rogir murdered his family and was the only one to survive, due to the quick thinking of the Abhorsen and his familiar, Mogget. He was preserved as the wooden figurehead of one of the royal boats in Holehallow.
[edit] Awakening
Touchstone was awakened by the Abhorsen's daughter Sabriel two hundred years later. He was unable, or unwilling, to mention his true name or the story of his imprisonment anywhere other than the pure waters of the Sea of Saere. Even there, he avoided speaking his true name, as Mogget (who was travelling with Sabriel to rescue her father, Terciel) had convinced him that he was only worthy of a fool's name, such as Touchstone.
Along with Sabriel, Touchstone defeated Kerrigor and married her after he became King. They bore two children, Ellimere and Sameth.
Touchstone and Sabriel began to rid the Old Kingdom of the Dead and the Necromancers. Later, on a political visit to Corvere, there was an assassination attempt, which Touchstone and Sabriel barely escaped, with the death of a hundred others around. They then proceeded to help Lirael bind Orannis, with Touchstone choosing Ranna as his binding bell. During the final battle, he reveals his real name: Torrigan.
