Semnornis ramphastinus (Jardine, 1855) |
The Toucan Barbet Semnornis ramphastinus is a distinctive Neotropical bird.
It is currently classified in the barbet family. However, DNA studies have shown that this family is paraphyletic (the toucans are more closely related to the New World Barbets than the latter are to barbets of the Old World); as a result, it has been proposed that the family should be split into five, in which case the Toucan-barbet and the Prong-billed Barbet would form a separate family, Semnornithidae.
