Toton is a small town in Nottinghamshire, located southwest of Nottingham. It forms part of the Greater Nottingham urban area, and is in the Borough of Broxtowe. It is predominantly residential, although it does have a large Tesco store and one of the main entrances to Chetwynd Barracks, which forms a natural boundary to the East, with the Midland Railway and Toton sidings as a boundary to the West.

[edit] Geography

Toton is sometimes considered to be a part of Beeston, and postal addresses use Beeston as the town name, not altogether popular with local residents. Other nearby places include Chilwell, Stapleford, Attenborough and Long Eaton.

[edit] History

Although the village of Toton has existed since at least Norman times, little is known of its history. Few old buildings remain, and most housing is twentieth century. The town grew principally because of Toton Sidings (see Toton Traction Maintenance Depot), a huge marshalling yard of the Midland Railway, where coal from the Nottinghamshire Coal Field would be sorted before being sent to the rest of the United Kingdom. The site is popular with railway enthusiasts, who can often be seen with cameras and binoculars, viewing the sidings from the nearby A52.

[edit] Churches

Toton has a C of E church, St. Peters, and a Methodist hall. There is also a Mormon church in the area.

[edit] Other definitions of Toton

Toton, or correctly written in Spanish, totón, also refers to a person, usually a student, that constantly strives to study and impress people around him or her. Doing so makes this person feel higher, nonsubstantial satisfaction when solving extremely trivial situations, which consequently minimizes the effect of the cognitive dissonance that has developed throughout the years due to the social and intellectual ineptitudes. In general, totones fail miserably in life and end up just contributing to world inefficiencies and, contrary to popular altruistic expectations, decreasing the social welfare.
