Toshiko Takaezu

Toshiko Takaezu (born 1922) is a potter.
Takaezu was born in Hawai'i. From 1948 to 1954 she studied art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, the University of Hawaii, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She taught for ten years at the Cleveland Institute of Art and for twenty-five at Princeton University, retiring in 1992 to become a studio artist.
Takaezu is best known for her large, beehive-shaped sculptures. Her work has been displayed in over 40 one-person exhibitions and her work is in the collection of over 20 museums. She has received dozens of awards, including five honorary doctorates.
She currently lives and works in Quakertown, New Jersey, about thirty miles northwest of Princeton. In addition to her studio in New Jersey she makes many of her larger sculptures at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York.
