Tosanoumi Toshio (Japanese: 土佐ノ海 敏生, born February 16, 1972 as Yamamoto Toshio (山本 敏生) in Aki City, Kōchi Prefecture, Japan), is a sumo wrestler. The highest rank he has reached is sekiwake.
Tosanoumi entered professional sumo in the third, makushita division in March 1994, initially wrestling under his real name, and entered jūryō four tournaments later. Another four tournaments later he was promoted to makuuchi division, entering as maegashira 7, the second highest ever rank at which to enter the top division. For his first makuuchi bout he was drawn against then ōzeki Wakanohana, followed by yokozuna Takanohana the second day. He lost both bouts, finishing the tournament 7-8.
Recovering from this, his first ever make-koshi, Tosanoumi continued to rise through the ranks, reaching komusubi in January 1996 and sekiwake in May 1997. Although he has never risen higher than sekiwake, he remained in makuuchi until January 2006, when a 5-10 result at maegashira 14 resulted in demotion to jūryō. He reappeared in makuuchi in May, but has remained at the bottom of the division since then.
Tosanoumi has won an incredible total of thirteen prizes (equal 7th ever) and 11 gold stars (equal 3rd highest ever) in his long makuuchi career.
